The 2055 NYPD Type-4 SWAT / Riot Hopper.
Last page we discussed the current large aerostats used for long term surveillance; this time we're looking at the 2050 NY Riot Hopper.
While based upon the design of the “Bug Eye” Hopper discussed in a previous email, the NYPD riot cars have a variety of revisions. They are constructed from stealth materials and carry heavy armor to prevent them being shot down whilst hovering over an angry crowd. Their Dyson engines are designed to take significant damage and still function, while the nozzles are modified to reduce their energy signature.
The car’s supervision and targeting systems are also upgraded to allow suppression fire to be targeted more accurately.
Certain surveillance cars carry so much electronic gear there is only room for one pilot, and no passengers. Those Hoppers are nicknamed “loners” due to the solitary nature of their use.
In this illustration the car’s side canisters are firing smoke and tear-gas missiles, but they can be fitted for a variety of crowd-control technologies.
The most common are “screechers,” which emit a high-frequency sound to injure or incapacitate the crowd. Screechers are hated by the riot police pilots, as despite noise-cancelling technology, sounds still leak into the cockpit causing a variety of complaints from migraines to hearing loss.

Sonic and ultrasonic weapons (USW) are currently under development being weapons of various types that use sound to injure, incapacitate, or kill an opponent. Some sonic weapons are currently in limited use or in research and development by military and police forces. Some of these weapons have been described as sonic bullets, sonic grenades, sonic mines, or sonic cannons. Some make a focused beam of sounds or ultrasound; some make an area field of sound. Due to this, the NYPD is switching to using aerially dispersed Syntheol gas. Syntheol is a mild hallucinogenic toxin that induces feelings of euphoria and contentment in the recipient. For this reason riots are sometimes started with the express intention of being gassed—these gatherings are called “blizzards” by the party goers.
The drug itself has found widespread, but illegal, use on the streets under the name Bliss 9.
