ALICE YU IN “THE THIRD PARLIAMENT RUN” SKETCHBOOK

The first sketch I did for the martian parliament design - a ‘bubble dome’ covered crater with seating carved from the martian bedrock. The members physically sit on / in the planet. I removed the greenery once I wrote the scene..

The dome in plan. Here I introduced a concrete plinth that surrounded the dome—a public promenade which became the UN Marine’s landing point. Encompassing the planet’s most important building with a lake and trees made sense to me as it’s a way of showing how far the republic has come in the 30 years since the first Rocket X landing. Little did they know what was about to happen …

The first sketch of the repurposed NASA ship ‘Fuck You Looking At’ was basically 2001’s ‘Discovery’ with the addition of radiators (space ships really need radiators, and the first Kubrick designs had them, so this is even more of a homage…

A more developed design - here I’m trying to keep every element contained within a simple geometry (like the circles, spheres, squares, cubes of the NYPD vehicle and gun design) in this case a cylinder. Front living section, long spine with supplies, and tail engine section. The radiators (gold) extend from the spine outwards.

There needs to be a way to get from the Fucker to the Martian surface. Quicker than you can say, “You’ve seen Aliens, right?” I sketched out this drop ship. However, in contrast to that movie, here I’ve tried to keep the central design approach being repurposed equipment. This is more a cargo transport than gunship. (The actual ship wraps around a cargo vessel which can be left on the ground, while it flies back to get more resources / people.)

So now we get to it - the actual attack run. The next page explains how I turned these sketches into a usable storyboard...
