HOW A CONCEPT ART SEARCH CREATED AN INSANE AI / HUMAN HYBRID

Say Hello To My Little Friend…

Low-Bar in all his glory.

This illustration is the only one that I didn’t do myself in this sequence. I was in the middle of writing This Automatic Eden when I watched the Denis Villeneuve movie Blade Runner 2049. It was so amazing I went back to watch it seven times over the next two weeks (and, considering how busy we all are, you can understand what a time commitment that was).

I adored the film’s production design, so after that first showing I Googled (well duck-duck-go'd) to see who had contributed to the design work. One person that showed up was George Hull and seeing his work opened a door onto a whole new universe:

These artists are so good it makes my brain hurt and my heart ache 😀

I am but a mere hack among greats 😂

I didn’t know concept artists put their illustrations on the internet after a movie was complete. When you think about it, it’s obvious they would, but it just passed me by. I spent the rest of the evening researching different designers as it was so much fun, but also as I needed an illustration for my first book cover.

After some time I found the website of Ben Mauro and art inspired by the book Altered Carbon:

How can you not be inspired by work such as this? Genius.

Altered Carbon is one of my favorite books (shame about the TV show), but how did these amazing illustrations become one of the main characters in the Cortex Series? (especially in The Genesis Engine 🤖) Let’s discuss evil vampires…
