Alice and Alex Linework Part 4
This is the image from the end of the last post (the background is blurred to allow us to concentrate on the colors of Alice's NYPD outfit). The blue is working as a good counterpoint to the red wall.
In the next layer of color - her belt and various componentry - I've highlighted the detailed linework by adding flashes of color. Red to emphasize the NYPD text and her elbows, yellows and oranges for her belt. It took a long time to get the colors right. Originally I went for more blue but everything started to blend together so I took colors from the background image, the reds and yellows, and used those. These help to give the illustration depth (her front, middle and back) as well as tying the drawing into the photograph.
Next were her weapons. I went for a neutral grey for the riot gun as it is the middle of the image (and when I added strong colors it dominated too much) with bright colors to pick out details, same as her uniform. The handgun was the reverse, the bright red here attracts your eye and shows the details of her belt and trousers to good effect.
The colors are flat without lighting effects (shadow and dirt) so to show these here's the all white image ...
Here it is with shadow added. The illustrations becomes "alive" compared to the all white image.
And here it is with dirt. You can see how these turn a flat image into something more more life and reality.
Finally add it all togther and you have Alice, colored, dirty and three dimenional. Now onto Alex, her oponnent then the wall behind ...
