Alice and Alex Linework Part 1
Now that I have the weapon designs finished (see previous posts) I have started to work up a scene from the book. This has taken some time as I’ve had to decide what to show and that lead me to think about what a future police force would wear.
The setting for the novel is New York in 25 years time and I wanted to avoid all the typical Sci-Fi tropes of exo-skeletons or bulky body armor. In this setting the future Police have to be mobile, fast and lithe as they spend the majority of their time chasing the criminal and less writing parking tickets (or any other repetitive task that have been taken over by MI driven systems).
To that end I saw Alice’s outfit more like those worn by a runner or climber - supple smart fabrics (made with a bullet proof weave of course) that allow her to move and react without constraints.
It also, to me, had to look highly optimized and practical. Every part of it has a function she would use day to day in her job from elbow pads to utility belt (RIP Adam West …)
Once that was set how should it look? In this world there are no permanent “NYPD” badges or signs, that is all controlled by the wearer. The fabric is impregnated with micro led’s controlled by voice command - she tells it how to look. From Ninja black to blazing arrest signs the clothing allows her to dictate how she should appear, one size fits all no longer exists.
So what scene to draw?
The majority of the book is set when she is working with the FBI on the central investigation and off the streets. This made me decide to illustrate something that showed her as she was before - a street cop helping people. Therefore I took a scene from the first chapter where she is arresting members of a street gang (still to be drawn) and started there.
Next? Location and atmosphere …
Next week I will post revisions and this week's progress ...
